Acupuncture is derived from Latin and means “needle prick". It is a holistic healing art that is used to treat the entire body of a person rather than treating some of the body parts of a person. Traditionally, acupuncture schools use hair-fine needles made of copper, silver, and stainless steel that are administered to patients in a specific manner, at specific points of the body. These points are known as “Acupoints". The Acupoints are based on meridians throughout the body. Usually people suffer from diseases when energy gets blocked in the meridians. When the needles are inserted into the specific points along the meridian lines, the balanced flow of energy is restored and the corresponding organs to the meridians are believed to be positively affected.
Acupuncture works effectively because the needles stimulate the release of pain-relieving endorphins into the body. These pain-relieving endorphins influence the release of neurotransmitters and therefore enhance the working of autonomic nervous systems. Acupuncture has not only proved to be an effective treatment for the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but also for diseases, such as allergies, depression, headaches, migraines, hypertension, musculoskeletal pain, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, and various others. There are various schools in th US that teach acupuncture. These schools teach both acupuncture prepare graduates to administer acupuncture to the patients in an effective manner.
